Philly.comA Mississippi state lawmaker sponsored legislation this week that would rename the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America.” State Rep. D. Stephen Holland introduced the bill on Feb. 7. According to the bill, the moniker would apply only to his home state. Holland’s bill provides that: “For all official purposes within the State of Mississippi, the body of water that is located directly south of Hancock, Harrison and Jackson counties shall be known as the Gulf of America … The act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2012.” Holland, a Democrat, is a farmer and funeral home director. He was not immediately available for comment.

I couldn’t agree with this move more, Mississippi state representative D. Stephen Holland. Mexicans are taking all of our jobs, flooding our streets with drugs and violence, yet still expect us to acknowledge their name on OUR Gulf? When it’s obvious that our beautiful shores of freedom are the best thing bordering their little body of water to begin with? Please. Nice to see somebody in one of those state houses finally get this right.

Best part about this: it was a Democrat that proposed it. Not some stereotypical Mexican-hating southern conservative looking to throw up 6 electric super-fences between here and Mexico, no. Just your everyday liberal farmer/funeral home director-turned Mississippi state politician doing his best to bring justice to the shores of America. Keep up the fight, Stephen. Doesn’t matter if the new name is only acknowledged in one state. Future generations are counting on you.

Viva Gulf of America!
