Eagles Sign LeSean McCoy To Five Year, $45 Million Deal
BGN – The Eagles have agreed to a new 5 year extension with RB LeSean McCoy that will pay him $45 million with almost $21 mil guaranteed. The deal ensures that he’ll be an Eagle through the 2017 season. McCoy set the Eagles franchise records for both rushing TDs (17) and total TDs (20). He rushed for over 1,300 yards and led the NFL in total TDs. The best part is, at only 23 years old this is a guy who hasn’t even reached his prime. And as scary as it can be to give a RB a long term deal, McCoy won’t even be 30 when this one is up. Shady’s deal puts a nice bow on offseason where the Eagles doled out huge money to their own guys. DeSean Jackson, Todd Herremans & Trent Cole all got big money extensions as well. The message sent was clear, this team takes care of their own and if you play well, you’ll be richly rewarded for it.
This is huge. First the first time in a long while, the Eagles should enter camp completely drama-free. No contract disputes. No superstar convicted felons coming to Lehigh for the first time. No quarterback controversy. No trade talk. Nothing.
If Jason Peters didn’t rupture his Achilles then hit it a month later with the Achilles Rupture Remix I would say this offseason was too good to be true. But even with that injury, the Eagles managed to address all their needs and significantly improve upon last years’ team.
For the record, Chris Johnson signed a $53 Million contract with $30 Million guaranteed last year. Adrian Peterson signed a $100 Million contract with $36 Million guaranteed. Even DeAngelo Williams got $43 Million with $21 Million guaranteed. Shady McCoy is A LOT better (and younger) than DeAngelo Williams. And we are paying in 2012 dollars!
Look at whats happened:
DeSean Jackson deal…done.
Trent Cole deal…done.
Todd Herremans deal…done.
LeSean McCoy deal…done.
Trading Asante Samuel’s contract…done.
Trading a 4th Rounder for Pro Bowl MLB…done.
Draft penetrating DT…done.
Draft new starter at LB…done.
No cap problems, no holding onto old bad contracts, and this is after going on a spending spree last year which brought in Nnamdi Asomugha, Jason Babin, Cullen Jenkins, Dominique Rogers-Cromartie, and paid Michael Vick $100 Million. STILL under the cap.
Hate the Eagles or not, Howie Roseman and the entire negotiation wing of the Philadelphia Eagles are truly as good as it gets.

Never win a Superbowl…done
One tiny problem…Andy Reid is still your coach.
Yes Howie Roseman is as good as it gets besides the fact that giving big dollars to running backs is fucking stupid and giving franchise dollars to an aging non-franchise QB is even stupider.
TonyTwotoes… wow you are stupid. McCoy will be under 30 when that extension runs out. So I think I’m fine with giving money to arguable the best RB in the game for all of his prime years. Also, Vick’s contract is not guaranteed after this upcoming season so after this season they can cut him with no cap hit. Glad you actually knew what you were talking about though. I swear the people who comment on barstool sites are all morons.
Arguably*
Having the cheesiest nickname in sports……Done
(Not going to deny that he is arguably the best RB in the game)
0 super bowls
dream team didn’t make playoffs….. lol and OSI won the Super Bowl, again LOL
First mission should be to get that rookie QB up to speed and maybe have him learn the play book. Since Vick is 100% on not playing an entire NFL season. And bolstering that defense was the best thing they did in the offseason. However keeping Andy Reid was the worst. He coaches his team right out of the game. Terrible clock management and worthless under pressure late in games. It’s a simple plan. Get the ball to McCoy EVERY down (a la 90′s Emmitt Smith) and they have a chance. Not a great chance but a chance.
sylvy823 AP is 27 and Chris Johnson is 26. How do those contracts look? The average career of a running back is like 3 years.
But of course you miss the main point – running backs are not important. I’ll even give you that Shady McCoy is the best RB in football. There has been 1 team in the past 10 years that won a Super Bowl with a running back in the top 10 in rushing – the ’04 Pats.
tony, i agree with you that throwing millions upon millions at RBs is stupid now since the league is clearly a passing league now. but this mccoy deal is great. he’s not just a running back, he can catch the ball too and when defenses have to account for the run and coverage in the open field for someone as elusive as mccoy, it’s going to open someone else up
and for an average of 9 mil a year (if he makes all his incentives which almost never happens with any player, not just rb’s) while still being under the cap to add another piece or two, it’s a great play
osi only needs to come back with the patrick roy rebuttal: i cant hear u, i have rings plugging my ears.
that said this eagles team grossly under achieved last year, and should make the playoffs with 10-12 wins
I gotta ring!! He got one too!!! No wait…he doesn’t
Bro…signing a RB to $20 mil guarantees is pretty much the stupidest thing you could do in today’s NFL. And fucking blind Eagles fans you signed a paper mâché QB for $100 mil. And now your left tackle is just finishing his cement breakfast. Yes yes I realize Vick is a lefty but that’s a HUGE loss. Plus you play in a fucking slaughterhouse division. Hate to tell you…Giants- better. Cowboys (about to puke)- better. And, again. You have Mike Kafka that’s going to have I start probably at least 4 games while Vick breaks something. While I’m one of the few left that has some respect for Philly fans crazy ass loyalty. Sorry. Get ready for an offseason of major change.
20 mil minimum over 5 years is a STEAL for a rb that produces the way mccoy does, passing league or not. it’s beyond annoying hearing people still talk about the 100mil contract to vick. it’s not 100 million, get over it. he only gets that much IF he meets EVERY incentive which is pretty much impossible because of how you all so eloquently stated that he never gets through a full season. also, eagles can cut him at the end of this year no questions asked if he doesn’t perform up to their liking. giants are better than us right now but no way the cowboys are. we can sneak out a division win if we keep destroying the rest of the east like years past because i’m predicting another close race with the giants again for the top spot
Tony… 2009-2010 Saints, 07-08 Giants, 05-06 Steelers, 04-05 Pats were all in the top 10 in team rush yards. Doesn’t matter if one guy is doing it or a collection of players. Obviously this is much more of a passing league but it’s foolish to think that the running game in a non-factor. Look how well the Texans, Saints, Niners and Ravens all did this past year, and all 4 were in the top 10 in team rushing. Plus, only 20 mill is guaranteed, which is a lot, but barring an injury I think we can agree he will at least earn the guaranteed portion of his contract before the wheels fall off.
i see this year as a win win for the eagles no matter what…either they perform up to expectation and make a superbowl appearance or reid will be fired. no complaints here with either of those scenarios
Plus, AP has had injury problems since he was in college. To the best of my knowledge McCoy has not had any serious injuries thus far.
Now they have 2 great runners in Vick and McCoy. Just need to find a QB who can win a Super Bowl. Cause I guarantee Vick will never win one. Ever.
sylvy823 – listen I appreciate you’re an Eagles fan. If I was an Eagles fan I’d want Shady resigned too. But you’re making my point for me when you say that it doesn’t matter if one guy is doing it or a collection of players. I’m all for TEAMS that can run the ball. Running backs are extremely injury prone given the pounding they take, so giving a big contract to a RB is a big risk to take. Statistics are not in McCoy’s favor.
Andy Reid + Michael Vick = losertown.
Don’t get why teams spend massive amounts of cash in the wrong places where it is readily apparent they will not make it deep in the playoffs again this year.
Sylv, giants were last in rushing this past year, I think that worked out for them
I love all the salary cap experts on here. The risk analysis and assessment provided here by the non-Eagles fans is nothing short of spectacular. Please, pontificate further, this is just fascinating stuff. We’re all riveted.
maybe you should tell Howie Roseman to start using his Jew negotiating powers to get you a QB who can win a SB and a head coach that puts his job before half price night at Golden Coral
to all philly haters- i know lesean himself hasnt won any super bowls, but legendary Eagles teams of the past have won many super bow- oh wait nevermind. you guys are right the eagles suck huge donkey cock
