espnAlthough the rapper’s latest mixture, “Dedication 4,” drops Aug. 15, last week in an interview with Atlanta radio station Hot 107.9, Wayne said he’s going to be taking a hiatus from his music career to focus his full attention on skateboarding. “I picked up the skateboard and I thought it’d be a hobby, and what happened is it’s a lifestyle,” he said. “In order to be fully committed, you have to live that lifestyle. With these young kids now, you have to be about that life. It’s kind of putting rap on the back burner. Rap is taking a backseat to skating. I believe my fans deserve some peace from me. I’ll be on my skateboard in the meantime.” In his latest interview, Wayne went on to describe a flat-bar and a quarter pipe he has installed in his recording booth, “so as soon as I get off the mic, I just drop the board down and skate.” The prolific rapper, who’s released nine albums and 17 mix tapes and appeared as a guest on hundreds of tracks, has been performing since he was 8 years old, when most kids would be asking their parents for their first skateboard. With his long history behind a microphone and in front of an audience of millions, perhaps it’s not surprising that he’s stepping back. “I’m always looking for the next thing to do. It does get pretty boring when it comes to just the rapping and all that type of stuff,” he said.

Obviously my initial gut reaction:

But then I thought about it for a while and gotta admit that this is a brilliant move for Weezy F. Skatey. Dude oversaturated the market with Lil Wayne-ness over the past 3-4 years. He was everywhere. Courtside at every game, arguing about Tebow with Skip Bayless, wearing sassy 10 year-old girls pants at the VMA’s…spreading himself too thin. A break is exactly what he needs. Plus if he can prove to more skaters that he’s legit and totally not some fake-gangster poser who keeps ollying solely to push more crap from his skate clothing line, the more moola the YMCMB general will have. People are already sick of Drake. Lil Wayne not rapping anymore is about 5 years overdue. Hopefully he can stay retired long enough to make a Lil Wayne return song something worth listening to and not just 32 bars about him eating pussy landing kickflips.

Follow your dreams, kids. Even if you’re really bad at them.
