The Big East will split into two six-team divisions and add a championship game in 2013 to reflect the league’s expansion, the conference announced Tuesday.
Over the last 12 months, the Big East has lost West Virginia to the Big 12 and Syracuse and Pittsburgh to the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Orange and the Panthers will join the ACC in time for the 2013 season. To offset these losses, the Big East added Central Florida, Memphis, Houston and SMU from Conference USA and San Diego State and Boise State from the Mountain West.
“This unique combination of nationwide scope and regional flavor reflects our commitment to innovation in response to the changing landscape in college football while honoring a tradition of success on the field and in the classroom,” Big East Commissioner Mike Aresco said.
Come 2013, the conference will create an East and a West Division – splitting up the 12 teams along geographic lines.
The two divisions:
San Diego State
“This new alignment gives the Conference and its fans the best of both worlds – national exposure that is a result of the Big East being in six of the top 10 U.S. media markets – with a schedule that focuses on spirited regional rivalries,” Aresco said.
Having Temple travel thousands of miles to play San Diego State, Boise State, Houston and the rest every year for the foreseeable future? Makes sense to me…but that’s only because I’m a Rutgers fan and Temple is competition. Pretty sure it’s unequivocally fucking retarded when looked at from the eyes of someone objective.
Why, Big East? Why punish the Owls like this? It’s like the second they crawl themselves back to football relevancy here comes the Conference to slap their asses back down to the bottom. Shame. Cosby can’t be happy.
