USA TodayPhiladelphia, a U.S. capital during the Revolutionary War, is often known as the City of Brotherly Love. Yet it gets another, much less flattering moniker in a new scorecard of U.S. cities — the “capital of toxicity.” The Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington metro area, which includes parts of four states (Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, Maryland) ranks No. 1 on Forbes’ 2011 Most Toxic Cities list. The reason? It has more than 50 Superfund sites, which are unused areas containing hazardous wastes. “Now we’re not saying that if you reside in one of these areas, you need to pack up and move, or seal your windows shut. But it pays to be aware of the risks in your area,” Forbes says in announcing the results.

Again? What is this shit? Every time I turn around Philly is at the top of some bullshit overly-broad list. Ugliest city. Least cultured. Worst dressers. I guarantee the majority of the outlets who produce these lists are based out of New York. And besides, who cares about Philly’s “Superfund sites”? Just as you said, Forbes, they’re UNUSED AREAS. I don’t see a problem with unused shit having hazardous waste. People are apparently using Queens all the time, and that place looks like it got nuked by the Ugly Bomb. All these California cities with 50 days of the year where it’s unhealthy to BREATHE, and Philly gets #1 cause we got a few dozen unused waste sites? Fuck you, Forbes. I’ll wash my open wounds in the Schuylkill before I move to a sprawling hazy wasteland like LA or to Boston where 80% of the people are short assholes named Colin.
